Milton was first settled by Jasper Martin and his
wife Sarah. Both had immigrated from Newcastle England and first
settled the property which is now Milton in 1822.
At that time the area was largely marshland and heavy forest
with the Sixteen Mile creek flowing naturally through the centre
of what is now Milton. Jasper saw the potential of this creek
and managed to dam it creating an artificial mill pond (pictured
below).
In these early years the mill became the center of settlement in
Milton. Newcomers to the area naturally settled in this small
hamlet that became known as Martin's Mills.
As our small town grew it soon became known as Mill Town, and
later Milton. |
